Trunk, 2011, from the Breathing Animations Project

This is from a series of single-frame animations.

Trunk was made from dozens of different pictures of this scene in the woods near my home on Staten Island. There was very little retouching but lots of specialized masking. Then the entire composition (which included between 50 and 75 separate layers) was compiled by subtly varying the opacity of all the masks. Here the image is running as a looped video, but the newer works are animated by randomizing the display code in the CSS.

In these works I'm thinking about the way a picture emerges from the act of paying attention.
