ArtTech Talk, by Sean Justice

This talk was given at the doctoral student colloquium in the Communication, Computing and Technology in Education program, at the invitation Prof. Charles Kinzer.

This website is the visual text of the talk; it was projected on screen while I was speaking. During the presentation I encouraged the audience to follow along on their own laptops, and to explore the embedded links while listening.

This version of the site contains notes (in these pop-out windows), as well as multiple links and other effects, so that someone who was not present during the "performance" of the talk might follow some the ideas and examples.

The talk addressed art and technology, broadly defined. I began by introducing some of my own art works, and talking about my career as an artist. Then I surveyed several different ways that we can talk about art and technology, for example, technology as a spectrum and art as kind of play. Finally, I introduced some contemporary art works that, in my mind, embody spectrum and play as I had been defining them. I identified these works as protocol toys.
